Keeping on Time and on Budget

Atrium Health's new Carolinas Rehabilitation Facility replaces an adjacent 1950s-era facility, providing much needed modern space to allow physicians and teammates to extend the impact of the hospital's nationally recognized care. The new 150,000-square-foot facility, design by NBBJ, entered construction during COVID and faced supply chain delays.

Innovation

Virtual staff training programs and close coordination with equipment planners allowed continued outpatient care in the old building during the move. The transition team worked in lock step with the general contractor to keep the transition activities moving forward while also optimizing the construction schedule.

Impact

Despite unprecedented construction delays and escalation, the move was 2.5 months ahead of schedule, saving millions of dollars. As clinicians with expertise in both architectural programming and transition planning, we found ways to save time while fully caring for patients.
